  25. I've been using 2.06 for a while now, and have obviously found it a much
  26. improved TOS. (It's in my Turbo 030). Anyway, I get the message "system out of
  27. memory" fairly often, and would like to have some ideas to either extend it's
  28. memory capability or figure out where the problem is.
  29.  
  30. I have done a lot of changing to my setup on 2.06 such as colors, icon
  31. assignments to certain programs or types of files, function-key assignments,
  32. program icons on the desktop etc. Maybe I just maxed it out, but I could
  33. really use some guidance on the limitations of 2.06 so I can adjust
  34. accordingly.

  42. Tom Jr., the "system out of memory" message is misleading and unnecessarily
  43. alarming.  You probably have lots of memory, but the NEWDESK.INF file has
  44. crept above its size limit (4Kb).  It's easy to do that, by installing too
  45. many applications and icons, especially in mono, where there's so much room
  46. for those nice small icons.
  47.  
  48. You might try un-installing some of the less crucial things, then saving the
  49. desktop.  If that doesn't work, use an ASCII text editor to remove some
  50. carefully selected lines from NEWDESK.INF directly.  Be sure you have a backup
  51. of the file first though.
  52.  
  53. If all that fails, delete or rename the file so the desktop can't find it;
  54. reboot, and install icons and applications from scratch.
  55.  
  56. Yeah, the size limit is lower than it should be.  But I think it was much
  57. lower, only 1Kb, on the first STs.

  73. Tom, further to what Mark said, one of the nice features of 2.06 is that you
  74. can have more than one NEWDESK.INF file. So you can, for example, have all
  75. your general WP tools set up as icons on the desktop and save that as
  76. NEWDESK1.INF, then remove them all and set up all your programing tools as
  77. icons and save that as NEWDESK2.INF, etc., etc. Switching between them is done
  78. from the options menu on the desktop, 'READ .INF FILE'. Doing that causes a
  79. warm boot, I believe, so be sure to save any work you're doing first.

  98. limit is too low, but a definite improvement over 1K.

  100. A 2.06 manual from the CodeHeads? Hmmm... I've been meaning to get to them
  101. about being able to use some of their stuff with enhanced resolutions in Crazy
  102. Dots, so now I have more of an excuse. Of course, other than a multitasking
  103. OS, I'd really rather use HotWire, but haven't since I bought Crazy Dots.

  127. I just took a look at the desktop, and you can assign a keystroke combination
  128. to load a new INF file. You just drop down the Options menu, click on Desktop
  129. config, and select Define Single Keystroke.

  147. can't assign single keys to _particular_ inf files, to call them up
  148. immediately.  I don't use NeoDesk, but I think this capability is what Al
  149. might be referring to.

  157. Users of _any_ TOS can load DESKTOP/NEWDESK.INF files by simply double-
  158. clicking on them.  Those with NewDeskTops can keep their INF files right on
  159. the screen as well.

  161. All you have to do is install DeskSwitch as an application for INF files.
  162. This powerful utility has been around for years.

  172. I don't usually see my TOS desktop, but I'll take a look to see if 3.06 will
  173. indeed let me install a new desktop by pressing a single key. Not by doing
  174. some other stuff AND pressing a key (which is the way I recall that it works),
  175. but by just pressing a key while at the desktop.

  190. Yes, Desk Switch works on the TT and the Falcon, too.  I should qualify that
  191. to say it appears to work with a quick test of a few different INF files.  I
  192. don't use it regularly so I can't rule out the kind of convoluted problems
  193. some people seem to report with some software.

  195. It should work under all TOSes because is uses a system AES call to accomplish
  196. its task.

  243. 3 years old.  It probably has the name DESKSWIT.ARC (or LZH).  It's also on

  275. You could only do that if the NEWDESK.INF size limit is stored in RAM.  It may
  276. be located only in ROM.  Even if it's located somewhere in RAM, it's not
  277. documented and messing with it would be an illegal programming practice.

  288. the desktop configuration dialog box.  Specifically I can't acces the function
  289. keys setting to put my own commands in. Specifically, how would I assign

  300. This is kind of misleading.  Actually, the Desktop Configuration dialog only
  301. REPORTS what your function key settings are!  To set a function key to an
  302. application, single click (highlight) the application.  Then click on Install
  303. Application in the Options menu. One of the options there is to assign that
  304. app to a function key. Once that is done, it will show in the Desktop
  305. Configuration dialog box.  This is on page 4-21 of the MSTe manual.  Don't
  306. forget to save your desktop if you want to have those function keys next time
  307. you turn your MSTe back on.  <g>
  308.  
  309. BTW, I wonder what kind of a MSTe Atari was running when they took the screen
  310. shot on page 4-26.  It shows 7,515,894 bytes of free memory!

  349.  After reading back through some of the archives of this topic I saw you
  350. talking about your SETSEEK program... I thought may be this might be the
  351. problem I am having with my MSTe and the floppies (posted over in the MegaST
  352. topic) so I d/led it tonight and tried it out... It did not make any differnce
  353. as far as my problem goes, but it did set the seek rate just as it is supposed
  354. to.. But there is one thing that does happen that I did not see in the doc
  355. file.... I set the seek for drive A (a 1.44) for 6ms and drive B (a SF 314) to
  356. 3ms.. All looks good and I do a get to make sure all is set.. But if I access
  357. a disk in drive A then do a get it is set to 12ms.. I do the same with B and
  358. it will stay at 3ms.. I did verify that TOS 2.06 does set the seek to 6ms..
  359. But as soon as I access A then drive A does to 12ms and drive B will stay at
  360. 6ms... By the way I did the same with the NEOcontrol panel and set the seek
  361. the same as with SETSEEK and got the same results.. Drive A has a mind of it's
  362. own  ;^)...

  364. This is not any kind of problrm at all, in fact all I wanted to do was set
  365. drive B to 3ms and SETSEEK does just that.. Just thought I would let you know
  366. that the 1.44 drive A will set it's self as soon as it is accessed....

  378. If you have a 1.44 meg drive, the seek rate will be automatically set based on
  379. the size of the floppy that you use.  You can disregard the results returned
  380. from SetSeek.  SetSeek is used to set the seek rate of 720K drives when using
  381. TOS 2.06 on older STs.

  441. Technologies sells what is called the TEC board, which contains TOS 2.06 and
  442. an excellent manual.

  465.    Currently, 2.06 is the latest that you can use in the STE. I
  466.  imagine the 5.0 will be for a different machine. 4.0 on the Falcon
  467.  will not run on the TT or any other Atari machine except for the
  468.  Falcon. The 2.06 upgrade is about $60.00. Ask the CodeHeads as they
  469.  sell just the chips also (or did).

  502. If the cache option shows up on your machine, you must have a 68030 (TT,
  503. Falcon, or add-on).  You should leave it enabled unless you encounter
  504. problems.  There are very few instances where the cache needs to be turned
  505. off.  I believe Notator might be one of those instances.

  507. We didn't document the cache option in the TEC manual because it isn't
  508. available on machines with TECs.

  516. Actually, John, the 68000 in the MegaSTE has a cache.  Also, since Notator
  517. only runs on 68000 machines, that's the cache to turn off. It won't help on a
  518. TT or Falcon. :)

  557. I just got a Mega STe with TOS 2.06 and HD floppy. I read in one of my manuals
  558. that the seek rate should be set to 6 ms for a HD floppy. It seemed to work ok
  559. before I set that speed via NeoDesk. So, is it really necessary to set it to 6
  560. ms? What are the benefits/hazards of doing it or not.

  572. and when I got home, the manual was for the Mega ST. I called the dealer where
  573. I bought it and he said that was the manual that was in the package when he
  574. got it. He said he would try to get one for me, but it has never materialized
  575. yet. I have been trying to find one hi and lo, but no luck. Do you know where
  576. I might find one?

  606.  with that, but you could purchase the Mega STe manual, or buy one of
  607.  the manuals from the Codeheads that they sell.

  627. This 'dumps' the screen image to your printer, but only works if you have an
  628. Epson compatible mode on your printer. Alt-Help does the same thing from
  629. inside any GEM program. There are patch programs in the library that let you
  630. dump to some other printers. You put one of these in your AUTO folder. I have
  631. one for my DeskJet.

  676. Tommy, I'm afraid the native printer driver in ALL ST/TT systems is the
  677. original Epson FX/RX system.  That's a 9-Pin printer and your 24-Pin LQ isn't
  678. set up to accept that type of signal in graphics mode.

  680. If your LQ has an FX compatible mode then you might try that, otherwise there
  681. used to be a printer driver mod in GEnie's library that when run in the Auto
  682. folder would install an LQ driver and disable the FX driver.

  704. at least it does on my MSTe.  Printing the screen is not very useful, IMO, but

  726. (full screen on down) and let's you print it out intelligently or save it as a
  727. graphic image in any number of formats. It's $40, and one of the best
  728. utilities around. It also lets you view all sorts of image files, from many
  729. platforms.

  749. I agree on Imagecopy 2, it is neat. You can congifure to save, choose the save
  750. format, even included PC? compressed Degas format. Quite a neat program. Works
  751. as an ACC and is ready anytime. Can configure to print file or screen at your
  752. command. No Atari Laser support yet, but most others fully supported.

  887. Simple!  Remove the 1.62 ROMs and install the 2.06 chips, making _very_ sure
  888. you have the notches facing the same way as the old ones. Otherwise you'll fry
  889. them.  (look on the PC board for the outline of the socket if u forget.
  890. You'll see one end has a notch in it.  That's your clue.)
  891.  
  892. There are three jumpers that need to be rewired (spelled resoldered) and
  893. that's it.

  944. I've just had TOS 2.06 installed and I'm currently switching over from TOS
  945. 1.04 and NEOdesk.

  949. Is there a way in TOS 2.06 to assign a specific icon to a file extension. For
  950. example, I want all .ARC files to look the same etc. I can make it happen for
  951. each individual file but can't seem to do it globally. I used to be able to do
  952. this under NEOdesk.

  954. Also, is there an explanation somewhere, on how the icons are assigned in the
  955. DESKICON.RSC file. I know that the second icon is applied to all folders, the
  956. third to the trash can etc. I would imagine that the first 12 slots or so are

  958. please explain what the DESKICON.DFN file does?

  960. As I understand it, (please correct me if I'm wrong), the DESKTOP.RSC file
  961. contains all the icons and the NEWDESK.INF file contains the information,

  963. resolutions etc. I've noticed that when you "save desktop" you get both
  964. NEWDESK.INF and DESKTOP.INF. I use a bootmanager (SUPERBOOT), so I save the
  965. desktop, the xfer the DESKICON.RSC file into the Superboot folder, rename it,
  966. and use it for manipulation. I notice that is HAS to be removed from the root
  967. directory of the boot disk or it will be used regardless of what Superboot is
  968. trying to do. I also notice that even if I remove the DESKTOP.INF file from
  969. the root directory, it always reappears everytime I re-boot, as if it's
  970. getting re-written each time. Is that in fact the case? As I mentioned before,
  971. I'm not clear on what the DESKTOP.INF file is for in TOS 2.06?
  972.  
  973. What are the options for editing the DESKTOP.RSC icon file, regarding re-
  974. arranging and/or adding new icons. I'm currently using the ICONJUGGLER by Jon

  1003. the name in the "Install Icon" dialog box.

  1005. Al is right - the best way to handle icons is with an editor.
  1006.  
  1007. DESKICON.RSC contains the icons. NEWDESK.INF contains the icon assignments, as
  1008. well as other desktop info such as hot key assignments and window/icon
  1009. arrangement. You only get NEWDESK.INF when you save the desktop. You are being
  1010. confused by SUPERBOOT. Superboot copies the active desktop file from its
  1011. library to your boot directory and renames it to DESKTOP.INF every time it
  1012. operates. This works because TOS 2 looks for DESKTOP.INF if there is no
  1013. NEWDESK.INF for backward compatibility. In order for SUPERBOOT to work
  1014. properly for you, EVERY TIME YOU CHANGE THE DESKTOP, before you turn off the
  1015. computer, you must save out a NEWDESK.INF file, then rename it to whatever
  1016. name you want Superboot to find it as, and then MOVE it to the AUTO/SUPERBOOT/
  1017. subfolder.  This is the only real inconvenience of using SUPERBOOT. I use it
  1018. myself with TOS 2.

  1144. Mr. Don, the folder bug only hit hard drives in TOS 1.0, I believe. In  later
  1145. TOS versions it sometimes locked up the system and required a cold boot
  1146. meaning you lost anything you were working on. In the latest TOS  versions not
  1147. only has the folder 'limit' been increased but TOS should  handle things more
  1148. neatly, allowing you to save and warm boot.

  1160.        I have come accross the exceeded folder limit for the first time this
  1161. year. It has happened a few times, I had my folderXXX program set at 100, it
  1162. is now set at 200. I believe I also have ICD boot set at 100 for a total of
  1163. 300. :-) I didnt' lose any data when I got the message but I had to reboot my
  1164. system.

  1192. The extra-colder setting depends on how many folders you usually access in a
  1193. single session. Most users probably would find the 40-folder figure (which TOS
  1194. has built-in) more than adequate, but some, like me, find the limit needs to
  1195. be set at 500 or so. Memory is also a factor ... no, the COMPUTER'S memory,
  1196. not yours and mine! :) If you have enough RAM, upping the folder count is very
  1197. cheap insurance. I'd say that you should have 2 extra folders for every
  1198. megabyte of HD space.

  1200. Versions of TOS prior to 1.04 crashed the system when the folder pool was
  1201. exhausted. Versions from 1.04 on up use a dynamic allocation, and you get a
  1202. gentle message (usually) when the pool is used up. But some HD utilities will

  1219. limit was only present in antique versions of TOS in that reaching the  limit
  1220. could scramble your FAT (I think it was the FAT). In TOS 2.05 that I use the
  1221. FAT isn't harmed and a simple warning message is displayed. No  problem.

  1243. problem. If you view the operating system as something that should behave
  1244. properly no matter how many files and folders are being accessed, it is
  1245. clearly a bug. If you view the OS as something akin to MS-DOS -- and TOS
  1246. clearly is related to DOS -- then the folder problem is little more than a
  1247. reminder that setting up your computer requires prior knowledge of what kind
  1248. of disk access it is likely to make.

  1281. root directory and folders at any level. In TOS versions prior to 1.04, every
  1282. folder accessed, and every item accessed in the root directory, took up a
  1283. folder slot in memory, and that slot remained used even when the folder or
  1284. file was closed. So in a long session you could easily run out of folder and
  1285. file slots, and when that happened, TOS barfed.
  1286.  
  1287. Later versions free the handles in memory, so the probability of using them up
  1288. is greatly diminished.

  1345.  The number of folders can be increased by simply by running a program.
  1346.  It doesn't FIX anything, all it does is increase the number of OS Pool
  1347.  Entries.

  1349.  In fact, AHDI the Atari Hard Disk Driver has the ability to set the
  1350.  number of pool entries in the driver (in versions about 3.0). You could
  1351.  configure the number in the driver and you wouldn't have to run FOLDER.PRG

  1354.  Keep in mind that that is a feature of the driver. Whether or not Atari
  1355.  ever released a program to modify those numbers in the driver is unknown

  1367. in terms of hand movement (both hands, unfortunately) for about six months,
  1368. and got the use of my hands back after therapy. I learned to type differently,
  1369. using my fingers more and my wrists less (my wrists not at all, usually).

  1518. question. I gave up on a SST board last year because I had so many headaches
  1519. with programs not running and directories getting scrambled. I'm getting some
  1520. of this with the 2.06. Several programs (even Degas Elite) have required re-
  1521. installing before the system would recognize them as programs. A few saves
  1522. have given me the dreaded "gray greek" file names that can't be erased or
  1523. moved. ANy ideas as to what is happening?? Thanks.

  1546. I'm not an expert here but....I too have a MegaST4 with a slightly different
  1547. configuration than you. I have a Fast Technology T25 and TOS206 piggybacked
  1548. with a switch that lets me use TOS 1.04 or TOS 2.06. I had this done for just
  1549. the reasons you're experiencing. Some things just won't run on 2.06. Now I
  1550. thought I had read a discussion somewhere here on GEnie that the TEC board
  1551. could be wired in such a way as to allow the use, (with a switch), of both
  1552. TOSes'. If all else fails, you may want to yak at the Codeheads about this
  1553. possibility, I know for me, it solved all my problems.

  1587. document.  When I've seen it is when the system has been running a series of
  1588. batch files (like on our BBS) where FoReM shells to a mailer, which in turn
  1589. has to call an archiver (like ST Zip, LZH, or ARC), which goes back to the
  1590. mail processor, which calls the archiver _again_, and finally goes back to the
  1591. front-end program for the BBS.

  1625.   The easiest way to install TOS 2.06 in your Mega is to buy the TEC board
  1626. from Codehead. I bought one a while back and installation took almost three

  1629. is(was) available from Wes Newell. His address is:

  1644. I have 2.06 on one of Wes Newell's TAB set-ups in my 4 MB 520STfmd. I had a
  1645. tech install it to be switchable with 1.04.  I even have a clock chip in
  1646. underneath the whole thing.  I don't know how much soldering was needed or if
  1647. any would have been needed had I not wanted the switch.  I do know that the
  1648. tech said that the instructions for the switchable installation contained an
  1649. error that would prevent it from working.  No matter which upgrade you go for,
  1650. I would recommend the book from the Codeheads as a good buy, almost essential
  1651. in fact.

  1743. One of the first things I figured out on TOS 2.06 was that I could eliminate
  1744. the TRASH Icon from the desktop.  This meant that I had to highlight an item
  1745. with the mouse & then hit a key to delete it.  I haven't dropped anything in
  1746. the TRASH by accident since.  The most logical key to use was DELETE, so I
  1747. nosed around the NEWDESK.INF file & figured out how the key assignments were
  1748. stored and rearranged it to my liking with the EDDA desk accessory text
  1749. editor.

  1751. Here is what my NewDesk hotkeys have evolved into over the last couple of
  1752. years.  I found it best to use keys that I would not normally hit during
  1753. Desktop operations.  At the same time, I have tried to have some logical
  1754. association between the key & the function - the question mark for Show Info,
  1755. the backslash to back up one directory level, etc..  My other criteria was
  1756. ease of use for often used commands - aka, when my Desktop gets a bit
  1757. cluttered, I just reach over to the Numeric Pad & hit asterisk/ENTER to "Read

  1806. Since I have an array of 10 or so .INF files for the different tasks I
  1807. perform, I have found it easier to load the good .INF file into a text editor,
  1808. cut or copy the "#K" line to the buffer, and then do a LOAD & PASTE with each
  1809. of the other .INF's.

  1811. Also, has it occurred to anyone else that you don't need drive icons on a
  1812. NewDesk Desktop?  Since you can open a window to a drive by hitting ALT/(drive
  1813. letter).  The only reason to have Desktop Icons at all is to have Installed
  1814. Applications that you can launch by dragging & dropping files.  If it's an
  1815. application that doesn't work with drag & drop, assign it to one of the
  1816. Function Keys.  I have Flash2 installed with an icon & an Fkey.  I can drag &
  1817. drop .DO files or hit F8 to start it with no file loaded.

  1842. designed to emulate -- quite a complement to Gribnif). I also have hotkeys
  1843. that load different desktops in NeoDesk, so that I can hit a function key and
  1844. get a totally blank desktop and walk away knowing that no one without
  1845. knowledge of which Fkey reloads the desktop will be able to mess up my TT or
  1846. ST.

  1866. The change is the result of getting a larger hard drive that gave me an "H"
  1867. partition.  CTRL [H] = Backspace.  When I tried to change a window over to
  1868. drive H, it closed the window instead.  In scanning down through the ASCII
  1869. table, the next logical choice was the apostrophe, so now I use it to close a
  1870. directory & SHIFT['] (or ["]) to close the window.

  1874. Here is what my NewDesk hotkeys have evolved into over the last couple of
  1875. years.  I found it best to use keys that I would not normally hit during
  1876. Desktop operations.  At the same time, I have tried t o have some logical
  1877. association between the key & the function - question mark [?] for Show Info,
  1878. apostrophe ['] to back up one directory level, qoutation mark to close the
  1879. window, etc..  The other cr iteria was ease of use for often used commands -
  1880. aka, when my Desktop gets a bit cluttered, I just reach over to the Numeric
  1881. Pad & hit asterisk/ENTER to "Read .INF File" thus restoring the bootup Desk
  1882. top.

  1943. I have just read mucho old posts concerning tos 2.06.  I have 2.05 on a 4mb
  1944. MSTE which works fine for me.  Thanks to discussion in the MSTE topic earlier
  1945. this year, I discovered I had a 1.44 fd inside which I got working by d/l'ing
  1946. the dipswitch cpx and the FDC.PRG "cookie jar" program, as suggested there.
  1947.  
  1948. After reading these 2.06 posts, the conclusion seemed to be that the major
  1949. difference between 2.05 and 2.06 was "official" support of the 1.44 hd floppy
  1950. standard and nothing else that I gleaned from the posts.  One post in May,
  1951. 1994 stated that 2.06 fixed "various bugs" from 2.05.  Just what are these
  1952. bugs?  Cicadas?  <g>
  1953.  
  1954. In these earlier posts (some which referred to a revision: _2.07_), I neither
  1955. saw any specificity as to what these 2.05 bugs were, nor do I now (correct
  1956. grammar?).  I don't seem to have any.  Hey, if you watched that Watergate
  1957. series on Discovery channel, you know how important specificity is.  (BTW, the
  1958. ending's still the same, Nixon resigns, and still waves prior to stepping into
  1959. the helicopter.  If you're too young to remember Watergate, you ought to check
  1960. it out during its rebroadcast.  It's an important constitutional history
  1961. lesson.)

  1979. D.A.K., the fix to the 1.44 meg drive was, I believe, to make it compatable
  1980. with the DOS formated disks of that size. In 2.05 this is unreliable;
  1981. sometimes it works and with some machines it doesn't. Another fix in 2.06 is,
  1982. I believe, the Wrap Fix problem. This hits mostly in ST High rez where the
  1983. screen will shift a half inch to the right and wrap itself around to  the left
  1984. edge of the screen. There's an auto folder program in the library to fix this
  1985. 'bug' in TOS 2.05 as well.

  1987. I think the rest of the fixes were of a similar vein. Not fixes to the TOS so
  1988. much as improvements in error handling, making the TOS more compatable with
  1989. programs that don't, quite, obey the rules. I don't know what they are,
  1990. though.

  1998. The most useful difference for me was the fact that 2.06 lets you enter the
  1999. extended characters by holding down the ALT key & typing in the Decimal ASSCII
  2000. value on the numeric key pad.  I find it especially handy for editting things
  2001. to publish where I use it to enter proper openning quotes, em-dashes, etc.

  2083. the Blitter socket and gives you 4 or 8 MB of additional RAM that does not
  2084. interfere with the use of video cards.

  2111. "all" to get correct access.

  2178. Falconer, to do high density on your machine you need to send a 16mhz  signal
  2179. to the floppy drive as well. That's the reason it is usually restricted to the
  2180. MSTE and TT. I have *heard* that it is possible to do it on a regular 8mhz ST
  2181. as well with some kind of hardware trick ... but I don't have a clue how,
  2182. sorry. I hope someone else can help you with this.

  2193.  
  2194. Although TOS 2.0x will work on STes and STs (with a hardware adapter), the
  2195. hardware on these machines will not support 1.44 drives without extensive
  2196. modification.

  2198. The hardware within the MSTe will support 1.44 drives IF you have an AJAX
  2199. chip.  The AJAX replaces the WD1772 floppy controller and is required to
  2200. handle the higher data rate from a 1.44 drive.
  2201.  
  2202. Bottom line:  You need a MSTe, TOS 2.0x and an AJAX chip as well as a 1.44
  2203. drive.

  2205. TTs and F030s also support 1.44 drives.

  2219.  I have a TEAC HD drive in my 1040 STfm/TOS 1.4, and it works beautifully on
  2220. high and normal density. I do have to use a standalone program to do the HD
  2221. format, but that's no problem. On my 1040 STe/TOS 2.05, I enabled a jumper and
  2222. can get HD formatting from the desktop format menu.
  2223.  There is a file in the library that may help you figure this out. The drive
  2224. has to be jumpered a certain way, and you WILL need an AJAX chip to replace
  2225. your WD-1772 floppy drive controller chip. Best Electronics and Toad have
  2226. them.
  2227.  Jim Allen has a circuit that will let a Mega automatically switch density
  2228. according to the type of disk inserted.

  2241. I have a bit of a problem.

  2243. I picked up TOS 2.06 at the CAF show, from TOAD.  Installed it (thanks Mike,
  2244. et al) taking the proper anti-static precautions.

  2246. Well, all worked fine for almost a week.  Now, the system runs fine after
  2247. finally booting up, but I repeatedly get anywhere from 2 to 10 bombs just
  2248. before Geneva runs NeoDesk. (3.04... haven't gotten Neo4 yet)

  2250. Also, it seems that whenever I run Aladdin now, the fragmentation to it's
  2251. partition is much greater than it used to be, and I now get frequent disk
  2252. errors/ FAT collisions found when running Diamond Medic or Edge.
  2253.  
  2254. Any ideas?  Could I have a bad set of ROMS?  I've rechecked the way their
  2255. seated, and everything _looks_ fine.
  2256.  
  2257. Help, if you can, I'm getting tired of having to re-boot several times when I

  2281. I did that very thing this evening, but haven't had the nerve to shut the
  2282. machine down to see what happens from a truly cold start.  It came up fine
  2283. after reseating the chips though.

  2285. Had a rough time just before I did that...  I fired up the machine, checked
  2286. the G partition (Aladdin's) in Edge, then attempted to log on.  Less than two
  2287. minutes into the session, I get a 'disk full' message, and have to abort.
  2288. Odd, as there were easily 4+ megs free in the partition.  (what can I say...
  2289. some of us have to make do with under a Gig. <G>)
  2290.  
  2291. I back out of Aladdin and open a window to 'G', and there are all my folders,
  2292. with nothing but slashes for titles!  Open a folder to check the files, and
  2293. most of them had only one file, named 'u'.

  2295. OHH Boy!  Wiped the partition, checked for bad sectors (none) and thanked the
  2296. folks at ORA aloud as I restored from recent backup. (did I mention that I
  2297. _love_ backups?!)

  2354. Try reseating the ROM chips.  Maybe they're loose.  For that matter, reseat -
  2355. all- of the chips while you're there.  Just pushing down on them is normally
  2356. enough.

  2359. is bad" or "ROM O is bad" or something like that.  E=even and O= odd)

  2361. Have you tried running on a stock system?  If it only bombs during Geneva,
  2362. then there is your problem (most likely).  Maybe a corrupt .RSC file.

  2399. There is, however, a new chapter to the saga.  After reseating the chips, it
  2400. booted fine.  I ran the system for many hours then shut down.  This morning, I
  2401. booted up fine as well.  Satisfied, I shut it down and left the house.
  2402.  
  2403. I returned about 5 hours later, and installed a Power Center, connecting the
  2404. CPU, monitor and external HD and Syquest to something to eliminate having to
  2405. continue reaching around to the various ON/OFF switches.
  2406.  
  2407. I booted up, to 2 bombs!  There was a dialog box this time which told me it
  2408. choked on NeoDesk.EXE.  (already posted to that area)
  2409.  
  2410. No manner of restoring from backup would help, neither did reinstalling NEO
  2411. from orig. disk.  I _did_ back the C partition up to the Syquest before the re-
  2412. install, but now, I can't get to my Syquest partitions!  The device is
  2413. recognized by ICD SCSI PRO during boot up, it shows the device in the boot
  2414. screen list, with NO partitions atributed to it!!!
  2415.  
  2416. Any further ideas?  I'm about to go nuts!

  2447.    When you first boot up, check to see if there are any problems
  2448.  using Cleanup, Edge, whatever will check the partition structure out.
  2449.  If there are problems, then try turning the power off and back on and

  2453.  lately, my internal drive has a bad disk structure (all kinds of
  2454.  errors, bad fats, etc.) when I first boot up after the computer has
  2455.  been off for awhile. If I cycle the power, the second time everything
  2456.  is fine. Where there were just errors, it's now fine. Strange.

  2468. that the cable routing of units with internal hard drives is CRITICAL! Perhaps
  2469. the cables got moved when you made your TOS change?

  2472. especially. If you can't route one away from the other, try to have them cross
  2473. at right angles.

  2495. Last night, after reinstalling Neo and rebuilding the Desktop, I rebooted
  2496. several times with no problems.  shut down about 1:30 AM and went to bed.
  2497. This morning, I booted up the machine to a new message: "Process Neodesk
  2498. exited with statis # -33 there is no file wiht this name".  It went to the
  2499. default desktop.
  2500.  
  2501. I rebuilt the desktop, and saved it.
  2502.  
  2503. Question:  Could there be something in the way 2.05 saved the .INF files that
  2504. 2.06 doesn't like?
  2505.  
  2506. Hard as it is to stay away from my machine, I will shut down now and try to
  2507. power up in a few hours.   We'll see what happens then.

  2523. I agree, it's odd.  That is what was happening when I first installed the 2.06
  2524. ROMS.  It went on like that for about a week.  First boot was problematic,
  2525. second, or third was fine, and fine until power up the next day.

  2595. Powered up about 10:30 this morning.  Went all the way up to loading the Neo4
  2596. desktop, then said it could not locat .INF file, but used the default so I did
  2597. get to the NeoDesktop.  I tossed the .INF file and created another, then shut
  2598. down.

  2600. As I only seem to have the problem after the machine has been down for at
  2601. least 5 hours I tried hard, and succeeded at keeping away form it until 3:30
  2602. pm.  Power up... a two bomb crash and a  message about _some_ Neodesk file I
  2603. was too apoplectic to read.  A stab at the return key and I'm at G's NoDesk.
  2604.  
  2605. One reboot and all is fine.  I powered down again for 20 minutes and as
  2606. expected, no problem at boot up.
  2607.  
  2608. It doesn't seem that this is a Neo4 problem, since it was also happening under
  2609. 3.04.  Guess I'll see what the folks have to say in the other areas tonight,
  2610. and if nothing else comes up, I'll reinstall _both_ Geneva and Neo4 from
  2611. scratch.

  2613. If that doesn't do it, it's back into duty for the old 2.05 chips, and these
  2614. 2.06's go off to Toad for checking.

  2625. Before you go crazy from trying to find a software fix for a hardware problem,
  2626. let me tell you about my latest "software" problem. Programs would't run frfom
  2627. my CD-ROM drive (they would from the hard drive), the ICD booter kept showing
  2628. Sense $13 errors when I did certain things, Neo 4 was crashing at odd times,
  2629. icons disappeared, my cell phone got the wrong numbers (OK, that's not true)
  2630. ... and the problem turned out to be a SCSI pin that wasn't seated properly.

  2648.  twice in a row without even letting it get to the desktop.

  2723.  the only one that would clear the drive. After that, I was able to
  2724.  reformat/partition the drive with my ICD utilities.

  2727.  data, I haven't had to reformat/repartition the drive since. For now,
  2728.  I just power up, let the HD get up to speed and then turn power off
  2729.  and back on and let it boot up from there. When I do this, I have no
  2730.  problems whatsoever with the drive being corrupted.

  2732.    When I get time to play with it, I will take it apart and see if I
  2733.  can find anything.

  2735.    I hate to say what piece of software it was because I swore I would
  2736.  never let it near my system at all. I was desperate though and except

  2759. (in fact, I couldn't load Neo4 in low res at all until I modified the
  2760. NEODESKL.INF file by hand to disable the blitter).  The line in the
  2761. NEODESKx.INF with the blitter status reads:

  2781. It seems I've had some better luck this time.  About 5+ hours ago I once again
  2782. reseated the ROM's and HA end of the HD ribbon, only I didn't press either as
  2783. far home as I had before.

  2848. Well, I may be making progress on my hardware problem, but I'm not sure.  I
  2849. booted up this evening after a 6 hour shut down to my normal boot set. (incl.
  2850. Geneva and Neo4)  This time, I held the CONTROL key which is supposed to tell
  2851. Beneva to boot without loading any .ACC's.

  2853. The machine booted up without any bombs, but I saw only a flash of the Neo4
  2854. info screen and was taken right to the Geneva Nodesktop.  No .ACC's were
  2855. loaded, mind you, so that part worked.  I think, however, that it is still
  2856. supposed to load and run NeoDesk.

  2858. Anyway, I'm happy I was able to boot with no bombs, the first time.

  2960. the MSTe to NO bombs.

  2979. here; I finally traced the problem to a cable, and then faced a day of fixing

  2988. I have recently acquired a 4 Meg STE with a high density floppy and TOS 2.06.
  2989. I was under the impression that if I format a floppy on my STE it can be read
  2990. by an IBM PC, but when I tried this the IBM  recognized the disk but reported
  2991. no files. Can anybody explain this

  2999. What did you use to format the floppy?

  3001. I don't have a HD floppy in my MSTe yet, but have had some trouble getting
  3002. floppies read by DOS boxes when I've formated from the desktop.  I much prefer
  3003. to use a formatter like Diamond Format from Oregon Research. (comes with
  3004. Diamond Back III)  Not sure, but it may be in the lib's.

  3012. Matt, I formatted the high density drive from the desktop using tos 2.06. I
  3013. have no problem reading files formatted on the IBM.

  3021. Yeah, that's the weird thing.  I can always read a disk formatted on the IBM,
  3022. but the clones can't always read the ones formatted from the Atari desktop.
  3023. Heck, I've had trouble taking files from DOS box to DOS box! <G>  Seems not
  3024. all DOS boxes are alike.

  3036. first name, or you aren't using Aladdin [and should be]...),

  3038. Some PCs will not recognize floppies or will have a hard time reading them if
  3039. they do not have a special code at the beginning of the disk. Atari actually
  3040. handles the disks properly.

  3042. If compatibility is important, format the disks on a PC first.
